Roel de Bont is a researcher at the Institute of Security and Global Affairs (ISGA). Roel studied Crisis and Security Management at Leiden University and graduated cum laude. He finished his study with a thesis on Dutch and Belgian jihadist foreign fighters. At ISGA, he continued to conduct research on topics related to foreign fighting and jihadism. A recent key publication is the report ‘Destination Syria’, which sheds light on several aspects of daily life in Syria. In addition, Roel is involved in the PRIME Project, which aims to improve our understanding of lone actor terrorism and to inform the design of social and physical counter-measures.
